Thanks to our friends at City Arts & Lectures, Xyza Junior Reporters and best friends Galen M. and Isabella W., had the opportunity to hear from Academy Award-winning director Francis Ford Coppola about his fascination with film and what inspired him to pursue a film career. Here’s what Galen had to report back:

An Evening with Francis Ford Coppola
By Galen M.

On the evening of September 26, 2017, at the Nourse Theater in San Francisco, my friend Isabella and I went to an interview with Francis Ford Coppola. Mr. Coppola directed some famous movies like “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now”. Dave Eggers was the interviewer.

I learned that Mr Coppola got polio when he was a kid. While he had polio, he would sit a lot and watch TV. One of the shows that he used to watch was Captain Video. Captain video was one of the first Science Fiction shows and it was on between 1949 and 1955. Mr Coppola said that he got a lot of inspiration for his movies from watching TV.

Fun Fact: Mr Coppola’s dad was a flute player and taught him music. I learned from Wikipedia that Francis Coppola ended up playing the tuba and he even got a scholarship for college.

Mr. Coppola directs movies but he also owns a winery and a restaurant. In his restaurant there is a bar and it has lots of props from his movies. He even said he has a car from “The Godfather” there.

I thought that the talk was very informative and I was glad that I got to go.
