WHAT HAPPENED: It’s an idea that cities like San Francisco and countries like Finland are experimenting with: giving away money for free. By giving money to those in need for basic things such as food and clothing, the hope is that those things become less of a burden for those who are struggling financially. This idea is called a “basic income.”
NOW WHAT: It looks like Canada is also giving the “basic income” idea a try in the province of Ontario. Four thousand randomly chosen people from three regions who have demonstrated a need will be receiving a basic income starting later this spring for the next three years. The pilot program is called, “Ontario Basic Income Pilot” and the hope is that this is another way for the government to show that it is working for the people.
