They’re brothers who run, walk, and jump through different lands collecting fireballs, force fields, speed, and other powers while dodging walking bombs and disruptive turtles to save a princess from creatures protecting these lands. Yes, we’re talking about Mario and Luigi of the popular video game Mario Bros.! They’re a sweet and cute duo that have entertained both children and adults alike ever since the game was first released in 1983. Since then, the Mario Bros. franchise has spun off many other games such as Mario Kart and Mario Smash Bros. Some would even argue that it was Mario Bros. that really made Nintendo the giant gaming company it is today.
So who was the designer behind this mega video game franchise? His name is Shigeru Miyamoto. He is a legend in the video game designing world, having designed some of the most well-known video games such as Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda. But why are we talking about him now? On November 3rd, Miyamoto will be awarded the Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government, the highest honor a person in a creative field can receive. While Miyamoto says he is humbled and honored to receive the award as an individual, he acknowledged the fact that these video games could not have been created by a single person and that he is grateful for the efforts of his development team. Congratulations, Mr. Miyamoto! Wa-hoo!
