Trivia time! How many new species are discovered in the Amazon in a single year? Two? Maybe three? Well, you might be shocked to know that a two-year review of the Amazon rainforest revealed that a new species is discovered in the Amazon every other day. That’s right! The scientists who conducted the study analyzed data from 2015 and 2016 and were surprised to find that 381 new species—we’re talking plants, fish, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and birds—were discovered during this time. But that wasn’t what shocked the scientists behind the study. What was most surprising was how many animals had actually evaded detection for so long!
