Press Freedom

May 3, 2019

Power comes in various forms. In our society, political lawmakers and leaders are influential, but so are ordinary citizens, as they have the power to vote. Another kind of power is the power of the press (or journalists). The press, often called the media, plays an essential role in keeping people informed. Journalists often travel to dangerous places to report on what happens around the world, and ensuring that they can safely conduct investigations is crucial. However, recently the media has gone through some troubling times as journalists face even more danger in the form of false accusations.

In 1993, the United Nations declared May 3rd World Press Freedom Day. The day is used to celebrate the freedom of the press to deliver truthful stories from around the world. This year’s theme is “Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation.”

What do you think this theme means? Do you think the press is essential? Why?
