When your family decides to stop doing something like using single-use plastic bottles, you’re making a difference in the fight against plastic pollution. No matter how big or small your action might seem, it makes a positive impact on the environment.
Now imagine what could happen if a major hotel chain made a small change. Hotel chain Marriott International has decided to do away with the small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizers that you often find in hotel rooms. Why? Well, it turns out that while hotels recycle the half-used bottles of beauty products, there are a lot of them! By removing all single-use plastic beauty products, Marriott would be eliminating approximately 200 million plastic bottles every year. That’s a lot of plastic bottles, wouldn’t you agree? Marriott’s goal is to remove all single-use beauty bottles in their hotels by the year 2020. But don’t worry, you’ll still be getting complimentary bath items when visiting their hotels—they’ll just be in bigger bottles that are refillable.
While Marriott International may be the largest and most recent hotel chain to eliminate single-use beauty products in their hotels, they’re certainly not the first. Other large corporations have also made moves to help save the planet from plastic pollution; for example, Disney Cruises has resolved to replace complimentary single-use beauty products on its cruise ships by 2021.
