Maybe you remember Toys “R” Us, maybe you don’t! Up until recently, Toys “R” Us was one of the largest, well-known toy stores in the United States. Based in New Jersey, the first Toys “R” Us store opened in 1948 as a children’s furniture store. It wasn’t until 1957 that founder Charles Lazarus opened the first Toys”R” Us store that only sold toys. With over eight hundred stores in the United States, Toys “R” Us created fond memories for many kids in the United States!

But with increasing competition from companies like Walmart and Amazon, the mega toy store has been struggling for years. This week, the company announced they were going to shut down all stores within two months. Interestingly enough, Amazon is thinking about buying some of the closed store locations to set up Amazon stores!

Interesting facts: Geoffrey the Giraffe is the mascot of Toys “R” Us stores, and Toys “R” Us had one of the most famous jingles of all times! It went “I don’t want to grow up, I’m a Toys “R” Us kid … ” Have you ever heard it before?
