Oh, Mario! He’s the fun-loving, red overall-wearing character seen in Nintendo games. He works with his brother Luigi (the green overall-wearing character!) and a sweet dinosaur named Yoshi to save the princess from the evil Bowser. It’s a fun game that takes you around the Mushroom Kingdom, dodging evil and capturing strength, speed, and “extra lives” along the way. Now, what if we told you that you can “play” this game in real life? Well, you sort of can … except you’re exploring Tokyo, Japan, and you’re not really saving a princess.
In Tokyo, Japan, several companies have popped up offering tourists a chance to put on Mario Bros. costumes and explore Tokyo in a go-kart. Some of these companies have been around for years, but recently this fun and carefree idea has become anything but. Earlier this year, Nintendo sued MariCar, one of the go-kart tour companies, for using their Mario Kart idea without permission. What’s more, the city that has some of the fewest traffic accidents in the world has seen a number of go-kart-related accidents in the last few months. For these reasons, the transport ministry is looking at tightening safety laws to prevent further accidents from happening. It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt, right?
So, if you’re ever in Tokyo and get the chance to dress up like Mario and drive around town in a go-kart, just be sure you’re being safe and watching out for others. After all, you’re there to save the princess, not to cause havoc around Tokyo while doing it!
