A 68 ft wave is a sight to behold, but how would you feel if you were surfing a wave that big? For Maya Gabeira, it was a dream come true! The skilled surfer held the record for the biggest surf ever ridden by a woman in 2018, and it was 68 ft high—just shorter than the White House. In February this year, she broke her record, riding a 73.5 ft wave in Portugal!
But wait, why did it take this long to declare her a record breaker? Well, it’s not exactly easy to measure a wave. Three different organizations assessed video footage, Gabeira’s size, and her surfboard measurements to finally declare the wave to be 73.5 ft high. That makes it the tallest wave surfed in 2020!
