A Shoe Win!

How much would you pay for a pair of
worn sneakers? Now, what if we told
you that the sneakers had been worn by
a legendary basketball player? If you’re a
fan of basketball or a sneaker collector,
your answer might have changed significantly once we said that the shoes were worn by a legendary player, right? Now, hold that thought.

Michael Jordan at Boston Garden

Whether you’re a fan of basketball or not, you probably know the name Michael Jordan. Why? Because he’s not only one of the best NBA basketball players of all time, but he’s also an extremely savvy businessman and entrepreneur. While he accumulated quite a fortune playing in the NBA, brand endorsements and his post-NBA business ventures and investments made him the billionaire he is today. (Interesting fact: He’s the world’s first billionaire athlete!) One of his greatest and most lucrative partnerships is with the sports brand Nike. When Jordan was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984, he also began his partnership with Nike that same year. Now, Jordan’s number twenty-three and signature highflying dunking logo can be found on Nike clothes, shoes, accessories, and much more. Nike’s Air Jordan line is so desirable that sneaker collectors wait in long lines and pay big money to own a pair—they’ll pay even more for a pair that was produced in limited quantities. Now just imagine how much a super fan and collector would pay for a pair of original Nike Air Jordan’s worn by none other than Michael Jordan himself? The answer is a lot! Recently, a pair of autographed Nike Air Jordan 1’s, worn by Michael Jordan in a game played in 1985, was auctioned off. Ten bidders from around the world wanted those sneakers, but it was the person who bid $560,000 that finally won the collectible. According to the auction house, the sneakers sold for over three times the amount they had expected. It just goes to show how much people love Michael Jordan and what a legend he truly is.
