Harris Is The First

During Pride Month, cities across the United States celebrate the LGBTQ community by hosting events and parties. One of Pride Month’s signature events is the Pride parade. Floats carry LGBTQ celebrities and supporters down a festive and colorful parade route while crowds gather in support of the LGBTQ community. Sure, it’s a big party and—might we add—tons of fun, but the message behind the event is serious: Inclusivity is important. Loving people for who they are is important. Local politicians often attend Pride events to show their support. But did you know that until this year, no sitting vice president of the United States has ever attended a Pride event? When Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, showed up at the Capital Pride Walk and Rally earlier this month wearing “Love is Love” and “Love First” T-shirts, they made history. While her visit was brief, she shared her support of the LGBTQ community by saying, “We celebrate all of the accomplishments,” but she continued by saying, “There is so much more work to do. And I know we are committed. And we understand the importance of this movement and our roles of leadership in this ongoing movement.”
