Alexander Hamilton didn’t throw away his shot, nor did Lin-Manuel Miranda. In 2015, the musical Hamilton premiered on Broadway, and the rest—as they say—is history. Nominated for a record-breaking sixteen Tony awards and winning eleven, Hamilton captured the hearts of theatergoers around the world with the story of Alexander Hamilton’s life. Yes, the story itself is fascinating, but perhaps it is the way the story is told that has made it the must-see musical on Broadway. Hamilton, after all, is a hip-hop musical—the first of its kind. Performers throw out fast-paced rhythmic rap verses and poetic rap battles and move across the stage through incredibly mind-blowing dance choreography. Shows have sold out within minutes around the world, disappointing many people who desperately wanted to watch the show. Fortunately, for those who haven’t had a chance to watch a live performance of Hamilton, the movie version of the musical will be available on Disney+ starting July 3rd—just in time for the 4th of July weekend.
Interesting Fact: Hamilton holds the record for the most Tony nominations, edging out The Producers which was nominated for fifteen awards in 2001. The Producers, however, holds the record for the most Tony wins with twelve, one more than Hamilton took home in 2016.
