Gorilla Troop at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park tested positive for COVID-19 in January.

There’s good news in the animal kingdom—a troop of gorillas from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are doing much better after they received a COVID-19 vaccine specifically formulated for animals. Phew! Back in early January, zookeepers noticed that some of the gorillas showed symptoms of COVID-19, such as coughing and congestion. Their hunch was confirmed when a few of the gorillas tested positive with the highly contagious California variant of the novel coronavirus. The veterinarian team at the zoo acted quickly and, thanks to the collaboration of colleagues and experts across the country, they received a supply of COVID-19 vaccinations specifically formulated for animals to give to the gorillas. With the gorillas doing better, the veterinarian team plans to give the vaccine to other animals at San Diego Zoo.

Now that’s some good news about the fight against COVID-19!
