If you recognize the name Angela Merkel, it’s because she’s been the Chancellor of Germany for sixteen years. As the second-longest serving and first female chancellor in the country’s history, Merkel is known for being a no-nonsense leader. Not only has she led and navigated her own country through crisis, but she’s also done the same for Europe. But all good things must come to an end and in 2018, Merkel announced that she wouldn’t be running for another term.
On September 26th, the people of Germany went to the polling booths to vote for a new Bundestag, or federal parliament. Which major political party, Merkel’s Christian Democratic Party or the Social Democratic Party, did the people of Germany vote for? In the end, Merkel’s Christian Democratic Party was defeated.
On December 8th, Merkel officially stepped down as the Chancellor of Germany, marking an official end to an era of leadership from one of the most powerful women in the world, and the Social Democratic Party’s Olaf Scholz was sworn in.
