The Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars, is one of the most prestigious American film awards. Two of the most sought-after awards are for Best Director and Best Picture. For the first time in Academy-award history, a female Chinese filmmaker named Chloé Zhao won both awards for her film, Nomadland. In her acceptance speech, Zhao shared a line from a Chinese poem, which she said translates to “People at birth are inherently good.” She continued by dedicating her award to those who continue to “hold onto the goodness in themselves and the goodness in each other.” She says that when things are tough, she holds onto these beliefs and that’s what keeps her going. Congratulations, Chloé!
