The Pulitzer Prize is one of the most prestigious prizes in media. Every year, people are awarded the prize in one of twenty-one categories. Awards have been given to journalists for covering (or uncovering!) history-making news and to artists for telling incredible stories through song. This year, a special Pulitzer citation was awarded to Darnella Frazier, the teenager who recorded the killing of George Floyd while in police custody. Although Frazier isn’t a professional journalist, co-chair of the Pulitzer Prize Board, Aminda Marqués González, said she deserved the citation “for courageously recording the murder of George Floyd, a video that spurred protests against police brutality around the world, highlighting the crucial role of citizens in journalists’ quest for truth and justice.”
