Many sporting events have been canceled this year, but runners got excited about one remaining running event in 2020. The Valencia half marathon in Spain made waves for some amazing records.
Kibiwott Kandie of Kenya shattered the world record of a half marathon time by 29 seconds. He ran the 13 miles in 57 minutes, 32 seconds. That’s less than 5 minutes a mile! In fact, the leading runners were at 13 minutes, 37 seconds at the 3.1 mile mark.
Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia won the women’s half marathon at 65 minutes, 18 seconds—setting a record for the fastest debut half marathon!
The women’s full marathon winner, Peres Jepchirchir, beat her own personal record, finishing 6 minutes earlier at 2 hours 17 minutes. The second place was just a minute away at 2 hours, 18 minutes.
In the men’s marathon, Evans Chebet of Kenya finished at 2 hours, 3 minutes.
