On the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II, Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Poland. Why Poland? The first attacks of the war were from Germany and they were on Polish cities. Even though the war happened eight decades ago, some Polish leaders believe that Germany should be held responsible for the damages caused. After all, it was one of the deadliest wars in history and over six million people lost their lives.
So what did President Steinmeier say when he visited Poland recently? He did something unusual; he apologized to the people of Poland and asked for their forgiveness. In his speech, President Steinmeier said that the war was a German crime.
Do you think that it is ever too late to apologize?
