Earlier this week, Nintendo’s Game Boy celebrated its 30th birthday. What’s a Game Boy, you might be wondering? It’s a handheld game device that was launched in Japan in 1989. While it wasn’t the first handheld game device ever invented, nor was it the most sophisticated, it was extremely popular. It was so popular in fact that the first 300,000 Game Boys sold out immediately! Whether Nintendo knew it or not, they had created a handheld game device that was so simple, fun, and easy-to-use, and games for the device that were so addicting (Super Mario Land and Tetris were two of their most successful games), that people all over the world wanted it. Since its debut in 1989, several other versions of the device have been made, and over 118 million units have been sold. In 2009, the Game Boy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.
