Dinner Table Conversation: What Was the First Text Message Ever Sent?

December 14, 2017

Can you imagine a time when texting didn’t exist? What!? No texting? No emojis? Yes, the horror, we know. But all kidding aside, it was just twenty-five years ago when the first text message ever was sent. On December 3rd, 1992, engineer Neil Papworth sent a message from his computer to a cellphone that read “Merry Christmas.” Although only two words, that text changed the future of communication, similar to what telephones did in the late 1800s. So the next time you’re sending a text or emoji-filled message, just remember that this ordinary way of communicating wasn’t so standard twenty-five years ago. Happy anniversary to the text message!
