Dinner Table Conversation: What Does It Take to Live on Another Planet?

June 13, 2017

In September 2016, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla (an electric car company) and SpaceX (a company that manufactures rockets and transports things to space), announced his plans for bringing more than just cargo to Mars — he plans to transport people there too! But we’re not just talking about the dreams of a billionaire entrepreneur here. No, he’s got a real plan and hopes to achieve this goal by the year 2025. That’s about nine years from now! Just think about that for a minute.

It was only about 40 years ago that a rover landed successfully on Mars and about a year ago that NASA scientists discovered liquid water there. Now, Elon Musk wants to send people to Mars and thinks that it is possible for a million people to live there in 40 to 100 years. Doesn’t that just blow your mind? It blows ours! And if you think it’s just Elon thinking about travel and life on Mars, you’re wrong. In October, President Barack Obama announced that the government has set a goal of “sending humans to Mars by the 2030s and returning them safely to Earth, with the ultimate ambition to one day remain there for an extended time.” Martian citizenship, anyone?
