Dinner Table Conversation: If You Were the Prince of a Country, What Would and Wouldn’t You Allow?

January 26, 2018

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman—also the First Deputy Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia—is bringing about some pretty radical changes to the conservative country. He recently talked about moderate islam in the country, which includes being more open to outsiders as well as reducing laws that restrict freedom for the Saudi people. Women recently gained the right to drive and attend soccer games, and the Crown Prince also cracked down on corruption by arresting many of the Saudi Elite (or Saudi princes and businessmen) who participate in corrupt activities.

Recently, commercial movie theaters opened up to the public for the first time in thirty-five years. We’re not quite sure how the movies were selected, but it seems like the first movie shown was … yes … The Emoji Movie, followed by Captain Underpants. Admittedly, these aren’t exactly classic movies. And yes, many Saudi people probably already watched movies on their computers, but allowing people to watch movies in a public venue is still a significant step for this government.

Oh, and if you guessed The Emoji Movie on our recent poll … good job!
