Do you believe in gods and goddesses? Some Hawaiians do, and they attribute the latest earthquakes and volcanic activity on the Big Island of Hawaii to Pele, their goddess of fire. After all, Pele is believed to have created Hawaii’s landscape and is also known as “the woman who devours the Earth.” Sounds like quite a powerful goddess! But whether you believe in Pele or not, one thing’s for sure: the Kilauea volcano continues to spew hot lava throughout the Puna region, causing residents to flee their homes and businesses. Residents have expressed frustration about the lack of information regarding when they can return to their homes, but the unpredictability of lava flow and the extreme amounts of sulfur dioxide filling the region have authorities asking residents to be patient. In the meantime, volunteers have set up temporary shelters and are feeding those that have been displaced.
