Costco Causes Chaos in Shanghai

September 3, 2019

Go big or go home, right? From the pizzas to the teddy bears, everything is big at Costco—that’s part of the appeal to the giant warehouse store. In 1983, Costco opened its first warehouse in Issaquah, Washington, and the rest—as we say—is history. Since then, Costco has expanded to over 770 warehouses and has a presence in ten countries. Recently, Costco opened its first store in Shanghai, China. Now, if you’ve ever been to a Costco on a weekend, you’ll probably agree that it can be quite overwhelming with lots of people pushing oversized shopping carts trying to get their supersized packages of toilet paper. Yes, a weekend trip to Costco can be quite hectic, but it might seem tame compared to what happened on opening day at the Shanghai warehouse. There were so many people eager to shop at Costco that the warehouse had to close early on opening day from too many people wanting to enter! The next day, police were deployed to assist with traffic congestion and only 2,000 people were allowed in the warehouse at a time. Talk about a crazy successful opening! Will Costco be able to keep up with the demand? We’ll have to wait and see, but from the looks of it, the people of China are loving the bulk prices.
