She spoke for over eight hours with no breaks—that’s bathroom, water, sitting, or otherwise—and all while wearing heels! It’s called a filibuster, and US House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi just broke the House record for the longest speech ever given on the House floor.
But she didn’t do it to break a record; she did it to convince members of the House and Speaker Paul Ryan to get an immigration bill to the floor before she would lend her support to a $300 billion spending deal that the House was looking to pass. Tit for tat? Perhaps, but Pelosi was fighting for a group of people called DREAMers, or people who were brought to the United States illegally when they were children. Last year, President Trump announced that he would reverse the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that former President Barack Obama had created. DACA allowed DREAMers to work, study, and live in the United States legally once they were cleared by the government. Pelosi used her time on the floor to defend the need to protect DREAMers and read letters and stories from children who had benefitted from DACA. #GoNancyGo, indeed!
