It’s wintertime, so it’s no surprise that it’s cold. But if it seems like it’s a bit colder than usual lately (your teeth chattering a bit more?), you’re not imagining things. It’s extremely cold, and if you live in parts of the eastern United States, it’s downright freezing! It’s so freezing that the recent average temperature on Mars (-2 degrees Fahrenheit) is actually warmer than the -35 degrees Fahrenheit meteorologists have measured at the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire! Where is all this cold weather coming from? Some meteorologists are calling this blast of cold a “bomb cyclone,” or where rapid low pressure, combined with heavy winds and rains, causes a crazy blast of cold.
It’s been so cold recently that some states have canceled their annual Polar Bear Plunge, an event where people jump into an icy cold body of water to raise money for charities. Animals have also suffered from the cold. In Florida, iguanas have been falling out of trees from being frozen solid! Not to worry though, if it warms up within a few days, those iguanas will thaw out and scamper away like nothing ever happened. If you’re tired of the cold, your best bet would be to head to the southern hemisphere where places like Sydney, Australia, are experiencing an extreme heat wave. Temperatures there are the exact opposite of cold, reaching record-scorching temperatures of 116 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s so hot in parts of Australia that bats are dying from this extreme heat. Yikes! We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait for some moderate springtime weather. Depending on where you live, we hope you’re staying warm or staying cool!
