What do Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants have in common? At first glance, you’d probably say nothing. But if you look beyond the premise of these two movies, you’ll soon realize that these seemingly different stories have two things in common: They’re both now Broadway musicals, and they’ve both been nominated for twelve Tony Awards. What’s a Tony Award, you ask? Only one of the most coveted awards in theater! And yes, Cady and the Plastics and a little yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants who lives in a pineapple at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean in a city called Bikini Bottom are now up for a lot of Tonys! So fetch, right? Who will take home the most awards? We’ll know on June 10th, when the best of Broadway gathers at Radio City Music Hall in New York City for the big award night.
Have you seen either of these musicals? What do you think makes a musical award-winning?
