Earlier this week, Illinois Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth became the first senator to have a baby while in office. Congratulations, Senator Duckworth, and welcome to the world, Maile Pearl Bowlsbey! But believe it or not, this is not Senator Duckworth’s first time being first at something. In 2012, Senator Duckworth became the first Asian-American to be elected to Congress in Illinois, the first female double-amputee to serve in Congress, and the first female congresswoman who was born in Thailand. Yep, that’s a lot of firsts! But if you think about the long history of the US Congress, you might just wonder why it took so long for these firsts to happen in the first place.
What do you think will be the next “first” for the US Congress?
